Lot 2937
Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 15 mm, 0.95 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Uncertain mint in Gaul (?), circa 333-340 (?). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to left. Rev. CONSTAN/TINVS / CAESAR in three lines; above, star; below exergual line, STR. Cf. RIC 489 (for prototype). Extremely rare. Light deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

Of the several thousands of official anepigraphic dynastic bronzes, not a single piece has an exergual line. In the contemporary imitations, a single die was engraved with an exergual line. It is known from two examples, this one and another showing the complete mint mark, 'STR'.
